Wordpress Theme Development Checklist

As a Wordpress theme developer, I always try to make the theme as much complete as it is possible before the final release. However, a lot of times, while I’m working on it, I miss to implement some of the functionalities or to style some of the elements.

Because I don’t want to make same mistakes in future, I decided to make printable version of the Wordpress Theme Development Checklist from Wordpress Codex. Although, the list is available at the WP Codex, it isn’t enough readable and it’s easier to have the cheat-sheet printed on paper.

Top TextMate Themes for Web Developers

I recently tried to make some change in my working environment and the first thing to do was to find a new theme for TextMate.

It appears that it is harder to find new theme than you think. The excellent list at tm-themes.com is offline (don’t know why but it was a great TextMate themes site) or download links at official MacroMates theme gallery are unavailable. The pursuit for the new theme started from Twitter, Google and went all the way to official theme gallery.

As I work with a lot of CSS, XHTML, Javascript and PHP files, the new theme needs to fit some of my requirements. It needs to help me with all that languages, particularly to easily see selectors, tags, functions, classes etc.

Fresh Fonts for Your New Web Designs with @font-face Support

Are you tired of web-safe fonts? Do you want to try some new fonts and give your site a breath of freshness? You’ve come to the right place!

@font-face usage

You have heard probably a lot about @font-face embedding. Here is a quick explanation what is all about. @font-face embedding allows you to use non-standard fonts in your web sites without hacks, like SIFR or Cufon font replacements.

First you need to get or generate @font-face kit. The FontSquirrel has a ton of prepared font kits that are ready to use. Beside that, you can generate font kits from your own fonts.

After your preferred font is ready, you will need to use @font-face css rule. Here is an quick example how you can insert PT Sans font:

Now the font is available, so all you need is to use your css selectors to apply new font.

If the browser doesn’t support @font-face rule, it will use Arial or other sans-serif that is available. Check below for a list of browsers that support @font-face rule.

Please note that the font you use must reside on your server and it’s publicly available for download, so you must be sure that the font is allowed for font-embedding.

To be sure that the users will see your design as you wanted, you need to be aware which browsers support @font-face css rule. Here is a short list of browsers that have support for @font-face rule.

Firefox 3.5 or higher – supports TTF, OTF and WOFF font formats
Internet Explorer 4 or higher – supports EOT font format
Google Chrome 4 or higher
Safari 3.1 or higher – supports TTF and OTF font formats
Opera 10 or higher – supports TTF, OTF and SVG font formats

I’m very happy to announce update v1.1 for Small Business Theme. This update brings much needed features for further customization of the theme.

New features in v1.1

About, Services and Contact boxes are widgetized.
New widgetized footer area.
All widgets have options for changing title and number of displayed posts.
Now it is possible to add same widget multiple times.
Option for disabling default portfolio feature. This is useful if your portfolio doesn’t have categories.
Portfolio page template. This template is used when you disable default portfolio feature and it will display all your portfolio posts. Advantage of using this template is that you can set position of your portfolio link in top menu.
